    About OCR GCSE Russian

This OCR GCSE Russian course is designed to develop your ability to communicate effectively in Russian across a range of practical, real-life contexts. You will explore themes such as identity and culture, local area and travel, school life, and future aspirations, building vocabulary and grammar that allow you to express opinions, describe experiences, and understand authentic materials.

The specification is structured around three main themes: Identity and Culture, Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest, and Current and Future Study and Employment. These themes are assessed through four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course encourages you to engage with Russian-speaking communities and cultures, fostering a deeper understanding of the language and its global significance.

    Assessment Structure

The OCR GCSE Russian qualification is assessed through four equally weighted papers, each contributing 25% to your final grade. Paper 1 (Listening) and Paper 3 (Reading) are externally assessed written examinations, each lasting 45 minutes at Foundation tier and 60 minutes at Higher tier, with a total of 50 marks each. Paper 2 (Speaking) is an internally assessed, externally moderated spoken examination, lasting 7-9 minutes at Foundation and 10-12 minutes at Higher, also worth 50 marks. Paper 4 (Writing) is an externally assessed written examination, lasting 60 minutes at Foundation and 75 minutes at Higher, with 60 marks. All papers are available in both Foundation and Higher tiers, and you will be entered for the same tier across all four skills.

    Why Choose OCR?

    • OCR's Russian specification offers a clear and logical progression from KS3, with a strong emphasis on spontaneous speaking and authentic language use. The assessment structure is straightforward, with equal weighting across all four skills, allowing you to showcase your strengths in each area.
    • The content is engaging and relevant, focusing on contemporary themes that resonate with young people, such as social media, environmental issues, and future career plans. This makes learning more motivating and helps you apply your language skills to real-world situations.
    • OCR provides excellent support resources, including past papers, mark schemes, and vocabulary lists, which are easily accessible on their website. This transparency helps you prepare effectively and understand exactly what examiners are looking for.
