About OCR GCSE Russian
This OCR GCSE Russian course is designed to develop your ability to communicate effectively in Russian across a range of practical, real-life contexts. You will explore themes such as identity and culture, local area and travel, school life, and future aspirations, building vocabulary and grammar that allow you to express opinions, describe experiences, and understand authentic materials.
The specification is structured around three main themes: Identity and Culture, Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest, and Current and Future Study and Employment. These themes are assessed through four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course encourages you to engage with Russian-speaking communities and cultures, fostering a deeper understanding of the language and its global significance.
Assessment Structure
The OCR GCSE Russian qualification is assessed through four equally weighted papers, each contributing 25% to your final grade. Paper 1 (Listening) and Paper 3 (Reading) are externally assessed written examinations, each lasting 45 minutes at Foundation tier and 60 minutes at Higher tier, with a total of 50 marks each. Paper 2 (Speaking) is an internally assessed, externally moderated spoken examination, lasting 7-9 minutes at Foundation and 10-12 minutes at Higher, also worth 50 marks. Paper 4 (Writing) is an externally assessed written examination, lasting 60 minutes at Foundation and 75 minutes at Higher, with 60 marks. All papers are available in both Foundation and Higher tiers, and you will be entered for the same tier across all four skills.
