    OCR A-Level Physics (H556) is a two-year linear course that develops your understanding of the fundamental principles governing the universe, from subatomic particles to the behaviour of stars. You will explore topics such as mechanics, electricity, waves, quantum physics, and thermal physics, building both conceptual depth and practical skills.

    The specification is designed to encourage you to think like a physicist, with a strong emphasis on the development of scientific literacy, problem-solving, and the application of mathematics to real-world contexts. It is structured into six teaching modules, which are assessed through three written papers and a practical endorsement, ensuring a balanced and rigorous preparation for higher education.

    Assessment Structure

    OCR A-Level Physics is assessed through three written papers at the end of Year 13. Paper 1 (Modelling Physics) covers content from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6, lasts 2 hours 15 minutes, and is worth 37% of the qualification (100 marks). Paper 2 (Exploring Physics) examines modules 1, 2, 3 and 5, also lasting 2 hours 15 minutes and contributing 37% (100 marks). Paper 3 (Unified Physics) assesses all modules (1-6) and is 1 hour 30 minutes, worth 26% (70 marks). All papers include a mixture of multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-response questions. Additionally, students complete a non-examined Practical Endorsement (component 04) which is reported separately as pass/fail and does not count towards the final grade.
