Study Notes
Overview

Theme 4: Future Aspirations, Study and Work is a crucial component of your GCSE Chinese examination. This topic appears across all four papers (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) and is highly valued by examiners because it naturally encourages the use of multiple timeframes—a key requirement for accessing higher mark bands. You will learn to articulate your educational plans, discuss various professions, and justify your career choices using complex sentence structures.

| 他们 (tāmen) | 准备 (zhǔnbèi) + Verb | They are preparing to... |
Irregulars to learn: There are no irregular verbs in Chinese! Just remember the word order: Subject + Time Word + Modal Verb + Action Verb + Object.
Key Structure 2: Past Tense Experiences
When to use it: To contrast your future plans with what you used to want, or to describe past work experience/volunteering.

🎧 Listening Skills
What to Expect
In the Listening exam, you will hear native speakers discussing their education, part-time jobs, and future plans. At Foundation, this might be matching jobs to people. At Higher, it involves understanding complex opinions and changing career paths.
Listening Strategies
- Listen for Time Markers: Pay close attention to words like 以前 (before), 现在 (now), and 将来 (future). Speakers often say "I used to want to be a teacher, but now I want to be a doctor." The question usually asks for their current or future plan.
- Watch for Negatives: Listen carefully for 不 (bù) and 没 (méi). "我不喜欢数学" means they don't like maths.
- Note Opinions: Listen for 觉得 (feel) and 认为 (think), followed by adjectives like 有意思 (interesting) or 无聊 (boring).
Common Listening Traps
- The "Changed Mind" Trap: The speaker mentions multiple jobs. "我爸爸是律师,所以我以前也想当律师。可是现在我打算做工程师。" (My dad is a lawyer, so I used to want to be one too. But now I plan to be an engineer.) The answer is engineer.
- Sound-alike Words: Confusing 经理 (jīnglǐ - manager) with 经历 (jīnglì - experience).
🗣️ Speaking Skills
Role Play Scenarios
Scenario: You are talking to a Chinese exchange student about your future plans.
- Student: 你毕业以后打算做什么? (What do you plan to do after graduating?)

(Translation: I am 15 this year, studying at secondary school. My favourite subjects are maths and science because they are interesting. Next year I plan to go to university. In the future, I want to be a doctor. I think being a doctor is good because you can help many people, and the salary is high. Last summer holiday, I volunteered at a hospital. Although it was busy, I learned a lot. I don't like working in an office because it is too boring.)
Model 150-word response (Higher):
(Translation: I am currently studying at a secondary school in the UK. Regarding my future, I already have clear plans. Firstly, I plan to go to university in London next year; my ideal major is computer science. I am very interested in computers, and I think today's society increasingly needs tech-savvy talent. After graduating, I hope to become a software engineer. In my opinion, this career not only has good prospects but also earns a lot of money. To achieve my dream, I study hard every day. Actually, my childhood dream was to be an actor because I liked performing. But later I realised being an actor is too difficult and the work is unstable. Last summer, I did a one-month internship at a tech company. Although the work was tiring every day, I learned many useful skills, which made me more certain of my future direction. In short, I will continue to work hard for my future.)

Getting into a top university (like Tsinghua or Peking University) is seen as a crucial step for future success. Traditional respected professions include doctors, teachers, and engineers, though modern tech careers are increasingly popular. Understanding this context adds depth to your writing and speaking responses when discussing the importance of studying hard (努力学习).
