📝 Grammar Focus

Key Structure 1: Futur I (werden + Infinitiv)
When to use it: To talk about your future career plans, what you will study, or what you will do after school.
Conjugation Table
| Subject | Verb Form | English |
|---|---|---|
| ich | werde | I will |
| du | wirst | you will (informal) |
| er/sie/es | wird | he/she/it will |
| wir | werden | we will |
| ihr | werdet | you will (plural) |
| sie/Sie | werden | they/you (formal) will |
Irregulars to learn: 'werden' is irregular in the 'du' and 'er/sie/es' forms. Remember that the infinitive verb ALWAYS goes to the end of the sentence (e.g., Ich werde Arzt werden).
Key Structure 2: Modal Verbs (wollen / möchten)
When to use it: To express what you want to do or would like to do in the future.
Conjugation Table (wollen - to want)
| Subject | Verb Form | English |
|---|---|---|
| ich | will | I want |
| du | willst | you want |
| er/sie/es | will | he/she/it wants |
| wir | wollen | we want |
| ihr | wollt | you want |
| sie/Sie | wollen | they/you want |
Irregulars to learn: 'wollen' is irregular in the singular forms (ich will, du willst, er will). Like 'werden', modal verbs send the main infinitive verb to the end of the clause.
Key Structure 3: Subordinating Conjunctions (weil / dass)
When to use it: To justify your opinions about school subjects or career choices. Examiners specifically look for 'weil' clauses to award higher marks.
Rule: Verb to the End
When you use 'weil' (because) or 'dass' (that), the conjugated verb gets kicked to the end of the clause.
Example: Ich lerne Deutsch, weil es nützlich ist.
Example: Ich denke, dass Mathe schwierig ist.
🎧 Listening Skills
What to Expect
In the listening exam, you will hear native speakers discussing their school experiences, their favourite or least favourite subjects, and their future career aspirations. You might hear interviews, school announcements, or conversations between friends.
Listening Strategies
- Listen for cognates: Words like 'Biologie', 'Chemie', and 'Musik' sound very similar to English. Use them to anchor your understanding.
- Watch for negatives: Listen carefully for words like 'nicht' (not), 'nie' (never), or 'kein' (no/none). "Ich lerne nicht gern Mathe" means they DON'T like maths.
- Note time markers: Pay attention to 'früher' (in the past), 'jetzt' (now), and 'in der Zukunft' (in the future) to understand which timeframe they are discussing.
Common Listening Traps
- Note vs Notiz: 'Note' means a school grade. 'Notiz' means a written note.
- Gymnasium vs Turnhalle: 'Gymnasium' is an academic grammar school, NOT a sports hall ('Turnhalle').
- Arbeiten vs Studieren: 'Arbeiten' means to work (a job). 'Studieren' specifically means to study at university, NOT to study for a test at school (which is 'lernen').

🌍 Cultural Knowledge
Understanding the German education system is crucial for this topic. Unlike the UK, German students are often separated into different types of schools at around age 10 based on their academic ability: the Gymnasium (academic, leading to university), the Realschule (intermediate, leading to vocational training), and the Hauptschule (basic, leading to trades). However, many areas now also have Gesamtschulen (comprehensive schools).
Also, grading in Germany is the opposite of the UK! A grade '1' (sehr gut) is the best possible mark, while a '6' (ungenügend) is the worst. Mentioning these cultural details in a speaking or writing exam shows excellent wider knowledge.
