In this NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Art and Design, you will embark on a creative journey that blends hands-on making with critical thinking. You’ll explore a wide range of materials, techniques and processes—from drawing and painting to sculpture, printmaking and digital media—while learning how to develop your ideas from initial concept to finished outcome. The course is structured around project briefs that mirror real-world design practice, encouraging you to experiment, take risks and build a personal portfolio that showcases your unique artistic voice.
The qualification is split into two main components: a skills-based unit where you investigate artists, designers and craftspeople, and a synoptic project where you respond to an externally set brief. Throughout, you’ll be supported to document your creative process in a sketchbook or digital journal, demonstrating how you research, plan, refine and evaluate your work. The emphasis is on practical exploration and personal development, with plenty of freedom to pursue your own interests within the framework of the specification.
This NCFE Art and Design qualification is assessed entirely through coursework, with no written exam. Your teacher internally marks the two mandatory units: Unit 1 (an exploration of art and design practices) and Unit 2 (the externally set, internally marked synoptic project). Work is then moderated by NCFE to ensure consistency. Grades are awarded at Level 1 (Pass) or Level 2 (Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction*), with the synoptic project being the main decider of the final grade. The emphasis is on the quality of your portfolio and final outcome, giving you time to develop and perfect your craft.
