Key Skills
The Pearson Edexcel AS Level Business specification (8BS0) provides a thorough introduction to the dynamic world of business, focusing on key functional areas and the challenges of operating in a competitive environment. Students explore Theme 1: Marketing and People, which examines how businesses identify and satisfy customer needs through effective marketing strategies and how they manage, motivate and lead their workforce. Theme 2: Managing Business Activities covers the financial and operational aspects of running a business, including raising finance, financial planning, resource management and responding to external influences.
The qualification emphasises the application of business concepts to real-world contexts, using a wide range of case studies from small start-ups to large multinationals. It develops critical skills such as data analysis, decision-making and evaluation, preparing students for further study or employment. The linear structure means that all AS content is assessed at the end of the course, encouraging synoptic understanding of how different business functions interrelate.
Assessment focuses on quantitative skills, written analysis and evaluation, mirroring the demands of the full A Level. Students are expected to use business terminology accurately and interpret financial data, such as budgets, cash-flow forecasts and break-even charts. This specification is designed to be co-teachable with the first year of the A Level, allowing seamless progression for those continuing to the full qualification.
The Pearson Edexcel AS Level Business is assessed through two externally examined papers, both taken at the end of the course. Paper 1 (Marketing and People) and Paper 2 (Managing Business Activities) each last 1 hour 30 minutes and carry 80 marks, contributing 50% of the total AS grade. Question types include multiple-choice, short-answer, data-response and extended open-response questions. There is no coursework or controlled assessment component. The total qualification mark is 160.
