Overview
The WJEC GCSE Chinese (Mandarin) qualification is designed to develop students’ ability to communicate effectively in Chinese across a range of practical contexts. Assessment & Exam Structure
The qualification is assessed through four components, each contributing 25% to the final grade: Unit 1 Listening, Unit 2 Speaking, Unit 3 Reading, and Unit 4 Writing. All assessments are externally set, with the exception of the Speaking component, which is internally conducted by the teacher and externally moderated by WJEC. Both Foundation and Higher tiers are available for each unit, allowing students to be entered at the most appropriate level for their ability. The Listening test lasts 35 minutes (Foundation) or 45 minutes (Higher), with tasks including multiple-choice, short-answer, and gap-fill questions. The Reading paper includes comprehension and translation tasks, while the Writing paper requires students to produce texts of varying lengths and styles. The Speaking test, conducted under controlled conditions, involves a role-play, a photo card discussion, and a general conversation, with preparation time provided. All marks are standardised to a uniform mark scale to ensure fairness, and students receive a grade on the 9–1 scale.
