Worked examples for ASCENTIS Vocational Plastering Techniques — try each before revealing the answer

What is the main reason for using a 'spot' and 'screed' method when applying plaster to a wall?

Answer: To establish a level and plumb surface for the plaster to be applied to

Spots are small dabs of plaster placed at intervals to act as depth guides. Screeds are strips of plaster run between spots to create a level, plumb reference. This ensures the final plaster surface is flat and true, which is essential for a quality finish.

What is the primary purpose of applying a scratch coat before the final coat in a three-coat plastering system?

Answer: To provide a key for the subsequent coats to bond to

The scratch coat is the first coat applied to the background. It is scratched (roughened) to create a mechanical key, which helps the following coats adhere properly. A smooth finish is the job of the final coat, and drying time is not the primary purpose.

When applying plaster to a wall, what is the correct sequence of trowel strokes for the final coat to achieve a smooth finish?

Answer: Lay on, lay off, then trowel up

The correct sequence is: lay on (apply the plaster), lay off (flatten it with a trowel), and then trowel up (polish the surface). This order ensures the plaster is evenly applied, leveled, and finally smoothed.

What is the purpose of applying a scratch coat before the final coat in a three-coat plastering system?

Answer: To provide a key for the subsequent coats to bond to

The scratch coat is applied first and scratched with a comb or nail to create a rough surface. This provides a mechanical key for the next coat to adhere to, ensuring a strong bond.

What is the main reason for using a 'spot' and 'screed' method when plastering a wall?

Answer: To establish a true, level surface for the plaster to be applied to

Spots (small dabs of plaster) and screeds (strips of plaster) are used as guides to ensure the plaster is applied to a consistent thickness and is flat and level. This is essential for a high-quality finish.

When applying a multi-layer plaster finish to a curved wall, what is the primary reason for using a scratch coat?

Answer: To provide a mechanical key for subsequent coats

The scratch coat is deliberately scored to create a rough surface that enhances adhesion for the next coat, ensuring a durable bond.
