Sample Exam Questions

Worked examples for EAL Vocational Hot Water Systems — try each before revealing the answer

In a typical domestic hot water system, what is the purpose of the vent pipe (open vent) on the hot water cylinder?

Answer: To allow expansion and release of air and steam, preventing pressure buildup

The vent pipe rises from the top of the cylinder and curves over the cold water storage tank. It allows hot water to expand and rise, and lets air or steam escape, preventing dangerous pressure buildup in the system.

When installing a hot water recirculation system in a hotel, what is the primary purpose of the recirculation pump?

Answer: To maintain water temperature at fixtures and reduce water wastage

Recirculation pumps continuously circulate hot water back to the heater, ensuring hot water is available quickly at fixtures and reducing the amount of water wasted while waiting for it to heat up. They do not primarily affect pressure, filtration, or backflow prevention.

In a large commercial building, what is the main advantage of using a pumped secondary return system for hot water circulation?

Answer: It ensures hot water is available quickly at all outlets, reducing water wastage

A pumped secondary return keeps hot water circulating continuously, so outlets have hot water almost immediately. While it can help maintain temperature, the primary advantage is convenience and water conservation. It doesn't eliminate cold water storage, and pipe sizing is based on demand, not just circulation.

In a domestic hot water system, what is the function of a 'secondary return'?

Answer: To circulate hot water continuously to keep it at the desired temperature at outlets

A secondary return is a pipe that circulates hot water from the cylinder through the distribution pipework and back, ensuring hot water is available at taps without waiting for the water to run hot.

In a building's hot water system, what is the primary purpose of an expansion vessel?

Answer: To accommodate the expansion of water when heated, preventing pressure build-up

Water expands when heated. In a sealed system, this expansion would cause a dangerous pressure increase. The expansion vessel contains air or gas that compresses, absorbing the extra volume and maintaining safe pressure.
