About Pearson as-level Economics
The Pearson Edexcel AS Level Economics course introduces you to the fundamental principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics. You'll explore how markets work, why they sometimes fail, and how government intervention can correct these failures. The specification focuses on real-world UK examples, helping you apply theory to practical situations and develop analytical and evaluation skills essential for further study.
The course is structured into two clear themes: 'Introduction to markets and market failure' (Theme 1) and 'The UK economy – performance and policies' (Theme 2). Theme 1 covers topics like supply and demand, elasticity, market failure, and government intervention. Theme 2 examines macroeconomic objectives, measures of economic performance, aggregate demand and supply, and fiscal, monetary and supply-side policies.
The AS qualification stands alone or can be the first half of the full A Level Economics. It's designed to be co-teachable with the A Level, progressing seamlessly. You'll build a solid foundation in economic thinking, developing the ability to question, analyse and evaluate economic issues, preparing you for a wide range of university courses and careers.
Assessment Structure
Assessment is through two written examination papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes long and worth 80 marks. Paper 1: 'Markets, Consumers and Firms' assesses Theme 1 content and Paper 2: 'The Wider Economic Environment' assesses Theme 2. Both papers include multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, data response and extended open-response questions. Each paper contributes 50% to the overall AS grade, and there is no coursework element.
