    Assessment Objectives explained

AO1 is the listening-to-writing objective: you hear Gujarati spoken material and then show, in written Gujarati or in written English as the task requires, that you have understood it and can respond to it.

    Read the full explanation

Two skills combine. First, comprehension: catching main points, specific details, opinions, attitudes and the overall purpose of what a speaker says. Second, response: producing written answers, summaries or developed points that address the question set on that recording. The phrase 'a variety of sources' means you should expect different speakers, accents, registers, speeds and text types, such as announcements, interviews, conversations or reports, rather than one uniform voice. Train by listening to authentic Gujarati audio, noting key information in Gujarati, then writing full answers without replaying endlessly.

    Your focus

    1. Identify main points, details and opinions in spoken Gujarati from more than one type of source.
    2. Produce written answers in Gujarati that respond directly to questions about a recording.
    3. Support written responses with specific information heard in the audio rather than general knowledge.

    Assessment Objectives exam tips

    Examiner Tips
    • 💡Build a listening routine: play a short Gujarati clip once, write the gist in Gujarati, then replay and add detail.
    • 💡Practise note-taking in Gujarati shorthand so you can convert notes into full written answers quickly.
    • 💡After each practice answer, check that every claim you wrote is actually supported by what the speaker said.
    Common Mistakes
    • Treating AO1 as a speaking or translation exercise. Correction: the assessed outcome is written response to spoken language, so practise writing your answers after listening.
    • Assuming one accent or one text type will appear. Correction: the objective says 'a variety of sources', so widen your listening to interviews, announcements, discussions and reports.
    • Writing down everything heard instead of answering the question. Correction: identify what the question asks, then select only the relevant details from the recording.
