Overview
Edexcel GCSE Latin offers students the opportunity to study the language and literature of ancient Rome, building a foundation in linguistic skills and literary appreciation. The course is divided into two core components: Latin Language and Latin Literature. In the language component, students master a defined vocabulary of around 450 words and a comprehensive range of grammar and syntax, enabling them to translate unseen passages from Latin into English and simple sentences from English into Latin. This structured approach allows for incremental learning and regular assessment of progress.
The literature component gives students the chance to read and analyse authentic Roman texts in their original language. They will study two prescribed sets of texts – one prose and one verse – drawn from authors such as Pliny, Virgil, Tacitus, or Ovid. Learners explore not only the literal meaning but also the literary style, rhetorical devices, and the social and historical context of the works, thereby gaining insight into Roman culture and thought.
Edexcel’s specification is designed to be accessible while providing challenge. The language syllabus builds systematically from basic grammar to more complex constructions, and the literature elements are selected to be engaging and age‑appropriate. Students also encounter cultural background in both language and literature papers, encouraging a holistic understanding of the Roman world. Overall, the course develops transferable skills such as attention to detail, analytical thinking, and structured writing, which are highly valued across further study and employment.
Why Choose Edexcel for Latin?
Edexcel provides a clearly defined vocabulary and grammar syllabus, making revision targeted and predictable. Students know exactly which words and constructions will appear in the language paper, removing guesswork.
The split of literature into two separate papers (prose and verse) allows learners to focus on one set of texts at a time, reducing the burden of keeping a large number of texts simultaneously in memory and giving each genre dedicated study time.
Pearson Edexcel offers an extensive range of free and premium support materials, including past papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, and comprehensive textbooks specifically written for this specification, which are highly regarded by teachers and students.
Assessment & Exam Structure
The Edexcel GCSE Latin qualification is assessed by three externally examined papers, all taken at the end of the course. Paper 1 (Language) accounts for 50% of the total marks and tests translation, comprehension, and a small English‑into‑Latin section. Papers 2 and 3 each weigh 25% and cover prescribed prose and verse literature respectively. Each literature paper includes translation, comprehension, and thematic analysis questions. There is no coursework or controlled assessment. All papers are written examinations, typically lasting between 1 hour 15 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes.
