The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National in Creative Media Practice is a vocational qualification designed for students who want to explore the media industry through hands-on, practical learning. This course focuses on developing skills in researching, planning, producing and evaluating media products across a range of platforms such as film, television, print, digital and interactive media. You will study how media texts are constructed, how they target audiences, and the professional practices and technologies used in the creative media sector.
The specification is built around a series of units that combine theoretical understanding with creative production work. You will complete both internally assessed coursework projects and externally assessed tasks, including a written exam and a practical set task. This structure ensures you gain a deep understanding of media concepts while building a portfolio of work that evidences your technical and creative abilities, preparing you for progression to higher education, apprenticeships or employment in the media and creative industries.
This qualification is assessed through a mixture of internally and externally assessed units. The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (equivalent to one A-level) comprises four units: two are externally assessed (one written exam based on media theory and industry knowledge, and one practical set task where you produce media products under timed conditions) and two are internally assessed coursework units where you create media artefacts such as short films, magazines or websites. Each unit is graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, and these combine to give an overall grade of P, M, D or D*. The total qualification size is 360 guided learning hours.
