2.1.a. Engagement patterns of different social groups in physical activities and sports - Physical activity and sport in the UK explained

This topic asks you to know what current participation trends look like in the UK and where the evidence comes from.

    Read the full explanation

Three sources are named: Sport England, National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Each publishes participation data, and you should recognise which body produces which kind of figure. Trends are then read across different social groups, for example by age, gender, ethnicity or disability, and across different physical activities and sports, so you can say which groups take part more or less and which activities are growing or declining. A strong answer names the source, identifies the group or activity, and states the direction of the trend rather than guessing.

    Your focus

    1. Identify the named sources of participation data: Sport England, NGBs and DCMS
    2. Describe current participation trends for different social groups
    3. Describe current participation trends across different physical activities and sports

2.1.a. Engagement patterns of different social groups in physical activities and sports - Physical activity and sport in the UK exam tips

    Marking Points
    • Names a named source such as Sport England, an NGB or DCMS and links it to participation data
    • Identifies a specific social group and states whether its participation is rising, falling or stable
    • Identifies a specific physical activity or sport and describes the direction of its participation trend
    • Distinguishes between data from different sources rather than treating all participation figures as identical
    Examiner Tips
    • 💡Read the question stem for the named source and match your answer to that body's data
    • 💡Anchor each trend to a named social group or a named activity so the answer is specific
    • 💡Use the direction of change (rising, falling, stable) rather than vague words such as 'popular'
    Common Mistakes
    • Treats every participation figure as coming from one unnamed source; name Sport England, an NGB or DCMS explicitly
    • Assumes all social groups show the same trend; identify the group and state its own direction
    • Confuses a single activity with the whole population; specify the activity or sport being described
