2e. Content for non-exam assessment: Analysing and Evaluating Performance (J587/05) explained
This unit asks you to show that you can analyse and evaluate performance, either your own or a peer's, in a practical activity.
Read the full explanation
Three linked tasks must be covered. First, analyse aspects of the performance: break down what happens in specific skills, techniques or tactical decisions and explain why they matter. Second, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses: judge which elements are effective and which are not, giving reasons linked to the activity. Third, produce an action plan that aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of the performance, for example by targeting a specific weakness with a practice method and a way to check progress. The analysis, evaluation and plan should connect to each other, so the weakness you identify is the one your plan addresses.
Your focus
- Analyse specific aspects of a practical performance by explaining how components of a skill or decision affect the outcome.
- Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a performance with justified reasons.
- Produce an action plan that targets an identified weakness and aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of the performance.

Marking Points
- Analyses specific aspects of the performance by breaking a skill, technique or tactical decision into its components and explaining why each component matters in the activity.
- Evaluates the strengths of the performance by identifying effective elements and justifying why they are effective with reference to the activity.
- Evaluates the weaknesses of the performance by identifying ineffective elements and explaining the consequence for performance.
- Produces an action plan that targets an identified weakness and aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of the performance.
- Links the action plan to the analysis and evaluation so the weakness identified is the one the plan addresses.
- Applies the analysis and evaluation to either the learner's own performance or that of a peer, keeping the focus consistent.
Examiner Tips
- 💡Choose one clear focus, either your own performance or a peer's, and keep it consistent throughout.
- 💡Support each strength and weakness with a specific example from the activity rather than a general comment.
- 💡Make the action plan specific: name the weakness, the practice method and how progress will be checked.
Common Mistakes
- Describes what happened in the performance without analysing why it happened; correct this by breaking the skill or decision into components and explaining their effect.
- Lists strengths and weaknesses without judging their impact; correct this by evaluating why each point matters for the quality of performance.
- Writes an action plan unrelated to the weaknesses identified; correct this by targeting the plan at a specific weakness from the evaluation.
- Switches between analysing own performance and a peer's without reason; keep one consistent focus throughout.
