Assessment Objectives explained
AO1 is the assessment objective that rewards recalling and using scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures accurately.
Read the full explanation
As a learner you should read it as a description of the kind of knowledge examiners look for: correct definitions and laws, correct descriptions of processes and techniques, and correct use of procedures such as standard practical methods. It is not a separate topic to revise but a lens for checking your notes. When you study a topic, ask whether you can state the idea precisely, describe the process in the right order, and outline the technique or procedure with its key steps. Use the specification statements to decide what counts as required knowledge, and practise writing short accurate explanations rather than vague summaries.
Your focus
- Identify what AO1 requires in terms of ideas, processes, techniques and procedures.
- Use specification statements to check the accuracy of your own knowledge.
- Describe a scientific process or practical procedure accurately and in order.
Assessment Objectives exam tips
Examiner Tips
- 💡Use the specification statements as a checklist of ideas, processes, techniques and procedures you must know.
- 💡Practise writing precise, ordered descriptions of processes and practical procedures.
- 💡When reviewing a topic, test yourself on definitions, then on describing the technique step by step.
Common Mistakes
- Treating AO1 as a topic to be revised separately: correction — it is an assessment objective describing the type of knowledge and understanding assessed across all topics.
- Assuming AO1 only means recalling definitions: correction — it also covers understanding of processes, techniques and procedures.
- Writing vague descriptions that omit key steps: correction — check that processes and procedures are described accurately and in the correct order.
