    Assessment Objectives explained

AO4 rewards two linked things: secure knowledge and understanding of aspects of culture and society in Portuguese-speaking countries, and a critical, analytical response to them.

    Read the full explanation

Knowledge means accurate, specific detail — institutions, traditions, events, social trends, cultural products — drawn from your study of the prescribed themes. Understanding means explaining significance rather than listing facts. Critical and analytical response means examining a claim, weighing evidence, considering more than one perspective and reaching a reasoned judgement, always tied to the question asked. For example, if the issue is the role of a cultural tradition in contemporary society, you would state what it involves, give specific supporting detail, consider arguments about its changing role, and conclude with a justified position.

    Your focus

    1. Demonstrate accurate and specific knowledge of aspects of the culture and society of Portuguese-speaking countries.
    2. Explain the significance of cultural and social features, showing understanding rather than description.
    3. Construct a critical, analytical response that weighs evidence and reaches a reasoned, well-supported judgement.

    Assessment Objectives exam tips

    Marking Points
    • Accurate, specific knowledge of aspects of culture and society in Portuguese-speaking countries, used to support the argument rather than displayed as a list.
    • Understanding shown by explaining the significance, causes or consequences of the cultural or social feature discussed, not merely describing it.
    • A critical and analytical response that examines the question, weighs evidence or perspectives, and reaches a reasoned judgement.
    • Relevance and focus: material selected must address the specific aspect named in the question, with a clear line of argument sustained across the response.
    • Coherent organisation in Portuguese, with paragraphs that each advance one point and link back to the question.
    Examiner Tips
    • 💡Underline the key analytical words in the question and keep returning to them so your response stays focused.
    • 💡Plan briefly before writing: one line per paragraph stating the point and the evidence you will use.
    • 💡Reserve time to check that your conclusion answers the question directly and follows from the evidence you presented.
    Common Mistakes
    • Writing a descriptive summary of a topic instead of answering the analytical demand. Correction: every paragraph should make a point and use detail as evidence for it.
    • Offering unsupported personal opinion with no cultural or social detail. Correction: anchor each judgement in specific knowledge from your study of the theme.
    • Treating one perspective as the only possible view. Correction: consider counter-arguments or alternative interpretations and explain why you find one more convincing.
    • Assuming a fixed number of marks or a prescribed paragraph formula applies. Correction: marks are awarded against the assessment objective, so focus on knowledge, understanding and analysis rather than a memorised template.
