Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation explained

In Paper 1 you hear recorded Russian material and must summarise what was said, reporting both the key points and the overall subject matter.

    Read the full explanation

This is a receptive-to-productive skill: you listen, identify the main ideas, then write a concise Russian summary that captures the gist and the essential details without padding. For example, a short interview about a student's move to a new city may contain a reason for moving, a problem encountered and an opinion about the outcome; your summary should state each of these clearly and in your own words. Practise by listening once for gist, noting keywords, then listening again to confirm names, numbers and attitudes. Keep the summary focused on what the speaker actually said, not on your own views. Accuracy of comprehension matters as much as fluency of expression.

    Your focus

    1. Listen to a spoken Russian source and identify its overall subject matter.
    2. Select and report the key points, distinguishing them from minor detail.
    3. Produce a concise, accurate Russian summary that conveys the source information in the learner's own words.

Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation exam tips

    Marking Points
    • Identifies the overall subject matter or topic of the spoken source accurately.
    • Reports the key points rather than isolated minor details or irrelevant asides.
    • Uses own words in Russian to convey meaning, not verbatim copying of long stretches.
    • Includes relevant supporting detail such as reasons, examples, numbers or opinions where they are central.
    • Maintains logical order and clear links between points so the summary reads coherently.
    • Shows accurate comprehension of vocabulary, grammar and register appropriate to the source.
    Examiner Tips
    • 💡Listen once for gist before writing anything, then use a second hearing to confirm key points and details.
    • 💡Note keywords and abbreviations in Russian or English during the recording to support accurate recall.
    • 💡Keep the summary concise and well organised; a clear structure helps the examiner follow your reporting of key points and subject matter.
    Common Mistakes
    • Writing a personal opinion or reaction instead of reporting what the speaker said; correction: summarise only the content and stance of the source.
    • Copying long phrases verbatim from the recording; correction: paraphrase in your own Russian while preserving the meaning.
    • Including every minor detail and losing the main thread; correction: prioritise key points and overall subject matter, then add only essential detail.
    • Mishearing numbers, names or negations and reporting them incorrectly; correction: listen again and check these high-risk items before writing.
