Edexcel A-Level Sociology offers an engaging exploration of contemporary UK society, examining how human behaviour is shaped by social structures, culture, and identity. The course is designed around the core themes of socialisation, culture and identity, and social differentiation, power and stratification. Students develop a critical understanding of key sociological theories (such as functionalism, Marxism, feminism, and postmodernism) and learn to apply them to real-world social issues, from education and family life to crime and global development.
Throughout the two-year linear course, learners investigate how social order is created and contested, focusing on areas like class, gender, ethnicity, and age. The specification emphasises active engagement with research methods, encouraging students to evaluate the strengths and limitations of different sociological approaches. By comparing classic and contemporary studies, you’ll build the analytical skills needed to assess evidence and construct well-reasoned arguments—vital preparation for university and careers in law, social work, journalism, or public policy.
The Edexcel specification is structured into clear, manageable topic areas: Paper 1 covers Socialisation, Culture and Identity; Paper 2 offers a choice of depth studies including Families and Households, Religion, or The Media; and Paper 3 focuses on Crime and Deviance alongside sociological theory and methods. This structure allows schools to tailor the course to student interests while ensuring comprehensive coverage of the discipline. With a strong focus on contemporary examples and exam-skills development, Edexcel A-Level Sociology equips you to think sociologically and engage with pressing societal debates.
Edexcel A-Level Sociology is assessed entirely through three written examinations taken at the end of the two-year course. There is no coursework. Paper 1 (Socialisation, Culture and Identity) lasts 2 hours, carries 80 marks, and accounts for 33.3% of the final grade. Paper 2 (Topics in Sociology, where you choose one topic from Families and Households, Religion, or The Media, plus research methods) is also 2 hours, 80 marks, and worth 33.3%. Paper 3 (Crime and Deviance and Theory and Methods) is again 2 hours, 80 marks, and 33.3%. All papers include a mix of short-answer and extended-writing questions, testing knowledge, application, analysis, and evaluation.
