The WJEC A-Level Business qualification provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic world of business. Throughout the course, you will explore how businesses of all sizes operate, from small start-ups to multinational corporations, with a particular focus on real-world contexts and the Welsh business environment. The specification is structured to build your knowledge progressively, starting with the fundamentals of setting up a business and moving through the key functional areas before analysing strategic decision-making. This approach helps you develop both practical business skills and the ability to think critically about business challenges.
Study is split across four units, with the first two forming the AS level and the remaining two completing the full A-level. Units 1 and 2 cover business opportunities and functions, laying the groundwork in marketing, finance, operations, and people management. Units 3 and 4 then explore business analysis, strategy, and how businesses respond to change, including technological, economic, and environmental shifts. The course is designed to be engaging and relevant, encouraging you to apply theory to real-life case studies and current business news.
A key strength of the WJEC specification is its clarity and logical progression. It avoids unnecessary overlap between units while ensuring that fundamental concepts are reinforced and extended. Quantitative skills are embedded throughout, reflecting the growing importance of data analysis in business decision-making. Ultimately, this course will equip you with a holistic understanding of business, preparing you for further study, entrepreneurship, or a wide range of careers.
The WJEC A-Level Business qualification is assessed through four written examinations, all taken at the end of the course (units 3 and 4), though units 1 and 2 may be taken at the end of year one to contribute to an AS qualification. Unit 1 (Business Opportunities) lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and accounts for 20% of the A-level. Unit 2 (Business Functions) lasts 2 hours and also contributes 20%. Unit 3 (Business Analysis and Strategy) is 2 hours 15 minutes and worth 30%, while Unit 4 (Business in a Changing World) is the same length and weighting. All papers are externally assessed and include a mix of short-answer data response and extended writing questions. There is no coursework component.
