Worked examples for ASCENTIS Vocational CV Writing — try each before revealing the answer

You are writing a CV for your first job application. Which of the following sections is most important to include?

Answer: Your contact details

Contact details are essential so the employer can reach you to invite you for an interview or offer you the job. Without them, your CV is useless. Hobbies and interests can be included but are not as critical as contact information.

When applying for a job, why is it important to tailor your CV to each specific role?

Answer: To highlight the skills and experiences that match the job description

Employers look for candidates who fit the role. Tailoring your CV shows you've read the job description and understand what they need, making you a stronger candidate. A longer CV isn't necessarily better, and tailoring doesn't replace a cover letter.

When writing a CV for a job application, what is the primary purpose of the 'personal statement' or 'summary' section?

Answer: To provide a concise overview of your key skills, experiences, and career goals that match the job

The personal statement is a brief, tailored introduction that highlights your most relevant qualifications and what you can offer the employer. It should be specific to the role, not a generic list of all jobs or personal details.

When tailoring your CV for a specific job application, what is the MOST important thing to do?

Answer: Match keywords and skills from the job description to your CV

Employers often use software to scan CVs for keywords. Matching your CV to the job description increases the chance of passing the initial screening and shows you've read the requirements carefully.

You find a job advert that asks for 'excellent communication skills'. Which of the following is the BEST way to demonstrate this on your CV?

Answer: Give a specific example of when you communicated effectively, e.g., 'Presented to 50 people at a school event'

Employers want evidence, not just claims. Providing a concrete example proves you have the skill and makes your CV more memorable.

When writing a CV for a job application, which section should be placed most prominently (near the top) to grab an employer's attention?

Answer: A personal profile or summary that highlights your key skills and career goals

A personal profile at the top of your CV provides a concise snapshot of who you are, your strengths, and what you're seeking. It helps employers quickly see your potential fit for the role, whereas other sections are supporting details.
