How to Revise Reading — CCEA A-Level ESOL & Literacy
Read and understand a range of texts in Irish, including literary and non-literary.. Answer questions in Irish or English to demonstrate understanding.
Examiner Tips for Reading
- Read the questions carefully before engaging with the text to know what information to search for, then scan for key words and phrases.
- When answering in English, ensure your response is natural English; when answering in Irish, prioritise clarity and grammatical accuracy over word-for-word reproduction.
- Allocate time proportionally: give more attention to higher-mark questions that require detailed analysis or synthesis of information.
- For literary texts, pay close attention to the title and any contextual clues that reveal tone or perspective from the outset.
Common Mistakes in Reading
- Relying on direct translation of phrases from Irish to English without processing overall meaning, leading to awkward or inaccurate answers.
- Providing superficial or incomplete answers by failing to read beyond the sentence containing the key word from the question.
- Misinterpreting idiomatic expressions or culturally specific references common in Irish texts.
- Confusing similar-looking Irish words (e.g., 'caint' vs. 'cáint') or misreading lenition/eclipsis that alters meaning.
Key Marking Points
- Award credit for precise identification of key details, main ideas, and supporting points directly from the text.
- Credit responses that effectively paraphrase or summarise text content in the chosen language without distorting meaning.
- Look for evidence of inferential understanding, such as deducing the author's purpose, attitude, or implied meaning.
- Reward analysis of linguistic and structural features where relevant, e.g., recognising tone, register, or stylistic devices.
