Ignoring words which are not needed explained
In many French reading and listening tasks, texts contain words that are not essential for grasping the main points.
Read the full explanation
A key strategy is learning to ignore these unnecessary words rather than letting them disrupt comprehension. Crucial information is frequently presented more than once and in different ways throughout a text. If a student fails to understand a point in one specific phrasing, they may fully comprehend it when it is rephrased later. For example, a text might describe a character as 'épuisé' (exhausted) and later say 'il n'a plus d'énergie' (he has no more energy); missing the first word does not prevent understanding the overall concept.
Your focus
- Differentiate between essential vocabulary and non-essential words in a French text.
- Extract the main points of a text despite the presence of unfamiliar, non-essential words.
- Recognise instances where key information is rephrased or repeated to aid overall comprehension.
Ignoring words which are not needed exam tips
Examiner Tips
- 💡Read the comprehension questions first to identify what specific information is essential, allowing you to ignore irrelevant words in the text.
- 💡If you hear an unknown word in a listening track, do not panic; listen for the rest of the sentence, as the idea may be clarified.
- 💡Practice summarising paragraphs to train yourself to extract main points while disregarding non-essential vocabulary.
Common Mistakes
- Misunderstanding that every single adjective or adverb must be translated to understand a text. Correction: Skim past non-essential descriptive words to focus on the core subject and verb of the sentence.
- Misunderstanding that missing one unfamiliar word means the key information is lost forever. Correction: Keep reading or listening, as the important points are likely to be repeated or rephrased later in the text.
- Misunderstanding that a concept will only be expressed using one specific vocabulary word. Correction: Look out for synonyms or paraphrasing that convey the same meaning to reinforce your understanding of the main points.
