The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Graded Examination in Music is a unique syllabus designed to develop essential musicianship skills for performers, with a special focus on the relationship between music and dance. The exam comprises three components: Performance (60 marks)—presenting a selection of pieces that showcase technical and expressive skills; Aural and Rhythmic Awareness (20 marks)—responding to rhythm clapping, pitch discrimination, and musical memory tests; and Sight-reading or Improvisation (20 marks)—demonstrating the ability to interpret unseen notation or create improvised musical phrases. No written papers or coursework are required, though candidates may submit a self-composed piece as part of the Performance component from Grade 5 onwards.
