Assessment Objectives explained
AO1 is the listening-to-writing objective: you hear Persian spoken material and then show, in written Persian, that you have understood it and can respond appropriately.

"A variety of sources" means the recordings differ in genre, register, speed and purpose — for example a news bulletin, a telephone conversation, a radio interview or a short announcement — so you must cope with formal and informal Persian, different accents and natural pace. In practice you listen, take notes in the target language, then answer in writing: selecting detail, summarising a speaker's point, inferring attitude, or writing a longer response that draws on what was said. Train by listening once for gist, again for detail, and by practising transcription of key phrases.
Your focus
- Identify the main points and specific details of a spoken Persian recording.
- Infer a speaker's attitude or purpose from tone, choice of words and context.
- Produce a clear written Persian response that conveys the required information accurately.
Assessment Objectives exam tips
Examiner Tips
- 💡Listen to the whole recording once without writing, to establish topic, speakers and situation, then use the second hearing for targeted note-taking.
- 💡Note key Persian words and figures rather than full sentences during the recording, and build full written answers afterwards.
- 💡Practise with authentic-style Persian audio of different genres and speeds, and check your written answers against the transcript to find where comprehension broke down.
Common Mistakes
- Treating AO1 as a speaking or translation objective. Correction: AO1 requires understanding of spoken Persian and a written response, so practise writing answers in Persian after listening, not speaking them aloud.
- Assuming all recordings are slow, formal studio Persian. Correction: prepare for varied sources — interviews, announcements, conversation — with different speeds, registers and regional accents.
- Writing a general impression instead of the specific information asked for. Correction: identify the task focus (detail, gist, attitude, inference) and answer that point with evidence from the recording.
- Ignoring accuracy of written Persian because the task is 'listening'. Correction: the response is written, so spelling, grammar and clarity of Persian count towards communicating your understanding.
