Assessment Objectives explained
AO3 is the writing-quality objective for this A-Level: you must manipulate Arabic accurately in written forms and show a range of lexis and structure.
Read the full explanation
'Manipulate' means controlling grammar and syntax deliberately, not merely producing short correct sentences. 'Accurately' covers spelling, agreement, verb forms, case and definiteness, and correct use of the Arabic script. 'A range of lexis' means varied, precise vocabulary suited to the topic rather than repeated high-frequency words. 'A range of structure' means different sentence types and cohesive devices: nominal and verbal sentences, subordinate clauses, connectors such as لأنّ, بينما and بالإضافة إلى ذلك, and appropriate register. Build a personal bank of topic vocabulary and complex structures, then draft, check and redraft written work so that accuracy and variety improve together.
Your focus
- Identify and correct errors of grammar, agreement and spelling in a piece of written Arabic.
- Select precise, varied vocabulary appropriate to a given course theme.
- Use a range of sentence structures and cohesive devices accurately in extended writing.
Assessment Objectives exam tips
Examiner Tips
- 💡Keep a vocabulary and structure log organised by the course themes, and add new items after each topic so revision is targeted.
- 💡After drafting, read your work once only for grammar and agreement, and once only for range of vocabulary and connectives.
- 💡Practise transforming sentences, for example changing a verbal sentence into a nominal one or joining two short sentences with an appropriate connector.
Common Mistakes
- Treating AO3 as a vocabulary test only. Correction: accuracy and range of structure are assessed too, so check grammar, agreement and sentence variety as well as word choice.
- Assuming long sentences automatically show range. Correction: range means varied and controlled structures; an overlong sentence with broken agreement loses accuracy marks.
- Ignoring the Arabic script and spelling in redrafting. Correction: accurate written forms include correct spelling, hamza and diacritics where needed, so proofread the script itself.
