Paper 2: Translation into Arabic and written response to works explained
This criterion asks you to show detailed understanding and appreciation of the works you have studied by writing critical and analytical responses in Arabic.
Read the full explanation
You study works from the prescribed list in Appendix 1, which includes literary texts and films, and you write about them in the language of study. A strong response goes beyond retelling the plot: it analyses how meaning is created through characterisation, structure, language or film technique, and it supports every claim with precise evidence from the work. You should show appreciation by evaluating the work's effects and significance, not merely describing events. Responses must be organised, with a clear line of argument sustained across paragraphs, and written in accurate, appropriate Arabic.
Your focus
- Demonstrate detailed understanding of works from the prescribed list in Appendix 1.
- Write critical and analytical responses in Arabic that evaluate how meaning is created.
- Support analysis with precise evidence and sustain a clear line of argument.
Paper 2: Translation into Arabic and written response to works exam tips
Marking Points

- Analyses how meaning and effects are created through technique, structure, language or film craft.
- Supports critical points with precise, relevant evidence from the work.
- Shows appreciation by evaluating the significance and impact of the work rather than only describing it.
- Organises the response with a clear, sustained line of argument across paragraphs.

Examiner Tips
- 💡Plan your argument before writing so each paragraph develops a distinct analytical point.
- 💡Embed short, precise evidence from the work to support each claim rather than listing examples.
- 💡Reserve time to check accuracy of Arabic, especially agreement, connectors and subject-specific vocabulary.
Common Mistakes
- Retelling the plot instead of analysing it: the correction is to make each paragraph advance an argument about how the work creates meaning.
- Making unsupported assertions about the work: the correction is to anchor every critical claim in specific evidence from the text or film.
- Writing in an informal or inaccurate register: the correction is to use precise, formal Arabic suited to critical analysis.
