Themes, sub-themes and research subjects explained
This row is course-structure guidance, not an assessed answer target.
Read the full explanation
It tells you how the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Arabic (9AA0) organises its prescribed content: every theme splits into exactly two sub-themes plus one research subject, and the research subject is printed in bold in the specification. Each sub-theme and each research subject then breaks down further into a series of aspects, which are the specific points you must be able to read about, discuss and research. When you read the specification, treat the bold entry as the research subject for that theme, not as a third sub-theme, and treat the listed aspects as the checklist of content you need to cover. Build a working map: theme, then its two sub-themes, then the research subject, then the aspects under each.
Your focus
- Identify, for a given theme, its two sub-themes and its bold research subject.
- List the aspects belonging to a named sub-theme or research subject.
- Use the theme, sub-theme, research subject and aspects structure to select appropriate reading and research material.
Themes, sub-themes and research subjects exam tips
Examiner Tips
- 💡Make a one-page grid with a row per theme and columns for sub-theme 1, sub-theme 2, research subject and aspects, then fill it in from the specification.
- 💡Highlight the bold research subject in your own copy and keep a separate research log for it, so you do not confuse it with the sub-themes.
- 💡When you choose an authentic Arabic text, check it against the aspects list and note which aspect it supports before you read it in detail.
Common Mistakes
- Mistaking the bold research subject for a third sub-theme. Correction: each theme has two sub-themes and one separate research subject, and the bold formatting marks the research subject.
- Treating the aspects as optional background. Correction: the aspects are the detailed content within each sub-theme and research subject, so they define what you must cover.
- Assuming the structure is the same for every qualification. Correction: this two-sub-theme-plus-research-subject pattern is the structure given for this Arabic specification, so follow the specification in front of you.
- Reading only the theme headings and skipping the aspects. Correction: the aspects are where the specific, examinable content sits, so work through them systematically.
