    About Pearson Edexcel GCSE Art and Design

    This Pearson Edexcel GCSE in Art and Design offers a broad and flexible framework for exploring your creativity. You will develop practical skills across a range of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art, while building a strong understanding of the formal elements and principles of design.

    The course is structured around four core areas: generating ideas, developing and refining work, recording observations, and presenting a personal response. You will study the work of artists, craftspeople, and designers from different cultures and historical periods to inform your own practice, culminating in a personal portfolio and an externally set assignment.

    Assessment Structure

    This qualification is 100% coursework-based, with no written exam papers. Component 1, the Personal Portfolio (worth 60% of the total qualification), is internally assessed and externally moderated, and requires you to produce a sustained project that demonstrates your skills in research, exploration, and development. Component 2, the Externally Set Assignment (worth 40%), is also internally assessed and externally moderated; it begins with a preparatory period where you respond to a theme set by Pearson, followed by a 10-hour supervised timed examination in which you produce your final piece(s). Both components are marked out of 72, and your final grade is based on the combined marks from both components.
