Paper 3: Reading and understanding in Russian explained
Paper 3 Reading asks you to understand whole texts, not just isolated words.
Read the full explanation
First read the passage for overall meaning, then locate the details that answer the question. Relevant details must be organised and presented clearly: group them logically, keep them in the order the question asks for and use only what the text supports. Where the text does not state something directly, you may need to draw an inference in context, for example a character who says they are tired and have an early start implies they will go to bed soon. Recognise implicit meaning by reading tone, attitude and situation, not just literal words. In multiple-choice questions, reject options that are true in general but not supported by this text, and choose the option that best matches both the explicit details and any implied meaning.
Your focus
- Demonstrate overall understanding of a Russian text and locate relevant details.
- Organise and present details clearly in response to a question.
- Draw a supported inference and recognise implicit meaning from context.
Paper 3: Reading and understanding in Russian exam tips
Marking Points
- Shows overall understanding of the whole Russian text rather than translating isolated words.
- Selects details that are relevant to the question and organises them clearly in the required order.
- Draws a supported inference from context, for example deducing a character's plan or feeling from what is said.
- Recognises implicit meaning such as tone, attitude or intention, and rejects options that are not supported by the text.
Examiner Tips
- 💡Read the questions first so you know which details to look for, then read the passage once for overall meaning.
- 💡For inference questions, find the evidence in the text and ask whether the option follows from it.
- 💡Check that your chosen option is supported by the passage as a whole, not by one word alone.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing an option because it contains a familiar Russian word: the error is word-matching without meaning, and the correction is to check what the whole sentence says.
- Treating an inference as a guess: the error is ignoring textual evidence, and the correction is to point to the words in the passage that support the inference.
- Copying every detail from the passage instead of the relevant ones: the error is failing to select, and the correction is to match each detail to the question asked.
