    Theme 3: School explained

This theme builds the language to describe your own school and compare it with others.

    Read the full explanation

You need vocabulary for school types (state, private, single-sex, mixed, primary and secondary), the shape of the school day (start and finish times, lessons, breaks, lunch, clubs), and subjects such as Russian, mathematics, sciences, history and art. You also need to explain rules and pressures: uniform, homework deadlines, behaviour expectations, exam stress and parental expectations. Finally, you describe how success is celebrated, for example prize-giving, certificates, announcements, displays of work or a school concert. In an MCQ you read or hear a short Russian text and choose the option that matches it, so train yourself to spot the key word that decides the answer rather than translating every word.

    Your focus

    1. Identify the school type, school-day details, subjects, rules, pressures and celebrations described in a short Russian text.
    2. Select the option that matches the text rather than an option that merely contains a familiar word.
    3. Justify a choice by pointing to the specific Russian word or phrase that decides the answer.

    Theme 3: School exam tips

    Marking Points
    • Identifies the school type named in the text, for example государственная школа (state school) or частная школа (private school), and rejects options naming a different type.
    • Matches details of the school day, such as lesson start time, number of lessons, break or lunch arrangements, to the correct option.
    • Selects the subject or subjects actually mentioned, distinguishing them from subjects that appear only as distractors.
    • Recognises a stated rule or pressure, for example a uniform requirement, a homework deadline or exam stress, and chooses the option that reflects it.
    • Identifies how success is celebrated, for example a certificate, prize, announcement or concert, rather than a general statement about good behaviour.
    • Uses grammatical clues such as case endings and negation to eliminate options that contradict the text.
    Examiner Tips
    • 💡Read the question stem first so you know whether you are looking for a school type, a time, a subject, a rule or a celebration.
    • 💡Underline the decisive word in the Russian text before looking at the options, then match that word to one option only.
    • 💡If two options seem possible, re-read the sentence and use case, gender or negation to decide which one the text actually supports.
    • 💡Practise with short authentic-style school texts and time yourself so that skimming becomes automatic.
    Common Mistakes
    • Choosing an option because it contains a familiar word from the text. Correction: check what the whole sentence says about that word, because a familiar noun may be a distractor in a different role.
    • Assuming every Russian school is the same. Correction: the text may describe a private, single-sex or specialist school, so answer from the details given, not from a general assumption.
    • Confusing похвала (praise) with наказание (punishment) or mixing up words for rules and freedoms. Correction: learn rule-and-pressure vocabulary in contrasting pairs and check the verb that goes with each noun.
    • Ignoring negation such as не or никогда. Correction: read to the end of the clause, because negation reverses the meaning of an otherwise familiar sentence.
    • Running out of time by translating every word. Correction: skim for the key noun or verb that the question targets, then confirm with the surrounding words.
