This row covers how international events and campaigns bring people together: sports events, music events, and campaigns and good causes.

Learn vocabulary for competitions and festivals (соревнование, чемпионат, фестиваль, концерт), for taking part and supporting (участвовать, болеть за, поддерживать) and for causes (благотворительность, помощь, экология). Be ready to say which events you watch or attend, why they matter and how they unite countries. Note that участвовать в requires the prepositional case, and болеть за takes the accusative. At Foundation level, focus on recognition and short answers; at Higher, add reasons and opinions. Practise matching event or cause words to descriptions and choosing the correct form in context.

Marking Points
- Recognises Russian vocabulary for sports events and music events, for example чемпионат, соревнование, фестиваль, концерт.
- Recognises vocabulary for campaigns and good causes, for example благотворительность, помощь, экология, and links each to its meaning.
- Uses участвовать в with the prepositional case correctly, as in участвовать в соревновании.
- Uses болеть за with the accusative to say which team or competitor someone supports.
- Expresses a simple opinion about why an event or cause brings people or countries together.
Examiner Tips
- 💡Group vocabulary by event type and by cause, and rehearse one sentence for each group aloud.
- 💡Drill the two fixed patterns участвовать в plus prepositional and болеть за plus accusative until they are automatic.
- 💡In multiple-choice items, check the case ending of each option against the preposition before deciding.
Common Mistakes
- Using the wrong case after участвовать в; the correction is the prepositional case, so участвовать в фестивале.
- Confusing болеть meaning to be ill with болеть за meaning to support a team; the correction is to note the preposition за and the accusative that follows.
- Treating концерт and фестиваль as identical; the correction is that a концерт is a concert performance while a фестиваль is a festival, often over several days.
- Giving an opinion with no reason; the correction is to add потому что and a short clause, for example потому что это объединяет людей.
