Themes and topics explained
This guidance explains how the Pearson GCSE Russian course is structured for study and assessment.
Read the full explanation
All four language skills — listening, speaking, reading and writing — are assessed through questions set in shared, common contexts rather than in separate topic worlds. Those contexts address a range of relevant contemporary and cultural themes, so learners should expect material about present-day life alongside cultural content. The content is organised into five themes, and each theme is broken down further into topics and sub-topics. When you read the specification, use this structure as your revision map: identify the five themes, list the topics under each, then the sub-topics beneath those. Build vocabulary and practice tasks theme by theme, and check that each skill is practised within the same contexts, because a listening task and a writing task can draw on the same theme.
Your focus
- Identify the five themes and the topics and sub-topics within each.
- Explain that all four language skills are assessed in common contexts.
- Organise revision so contemporary and cultural content is covered theme by theme across all four skills.
Themes and topics exam tips
Examiner Tips
- 💡Make a one-page map of the five themes with their topics and sub-topics, and tick each off as you revise it.
- 💡For every sub-topic, practise all four skills in that same context rather than drilling one skill in isolation.
- 💡Collect contemporary and cultural examples as you meet them, and file each under the correct theme so your notes match the course structure.
Common Mistakes
- Treating the four skills as separate syllabuses with unrelated content. Correction: the questions are set in common contexts, so vocabulary and ideas learned for one skill transfer to the others.
- Assuming the themes are only about everyday transactional situations. Correction: the contexts also address cultural themes, so prepare for cultural content as well as practical topics.
- Revising from a flat topic list and ignoring the hierarchy. Correction: the content is organised into five themes, each broken down into topics and sub-topics, so learn the structure and work through it systematically.
