Theme 4: Future aspirations, study and work explained

This element asks you to use Russian to discuss future ambitions in three areas.

    Read the full explanation

Further study means continuing education after school, for example college, university or a course, and saying what you want to study and why. Volunteering means giving time without pay, for example helping a charity, a community project or an environmental group, and explaining what you would do. Training means learning skills for a job, for example an apprenticeship, a work placement or a professional course, and describing the skills you would gain. In an MCQ you read a short Russian text or question about one of these ambitions and choose the option that matches it. The task tests comprehension of ambition vocabulary and of structures for plans and intentions, such as ways of saying what someone wants or is going to do.

    Your focus

    1. Distinguish between further study, volunteering and training in a short Russian text.
    2. Match a Russian statement of ambition to the correct option.
    3. Use vocabulary of plans and intentions to identify what a person wants to do.

Theme 4: Future aspirations, study and work exam tips

    Marking Points
    • Identifies which ambition is described: further study, volunteering or training.
    • Selects the option that matches the Russian text rather than an option that merely repeats a theme word.
    • Recognises vocabulary for further study, such as words for university, courses and subjects.
    • Recognises vocabulary for volunteering, such as words for helping, charities and unpaid work.
    • Recognises vocabulary for training, such as words for apprenticeships, skills and qualifications.
    • Uses forms that express plans and intentions to work out what the person wants to do.
    Examiner Tips
    • 💡Decide first whether the item is about study, volunteering or training, then read the options with that filter.
    • 💡Look for the phrase in the Russian text that justifies your answer and check that no option adds unsupported detail.
    • 💡Watch verbs of intention and future forms, because they often carry the key contrast between options.
    Common Mistakes
    • Confusing volunteering with paid employment because both involve work; the correction is to check whether the text says the activity is unpaid or for a charity.
    • Confusing training with further study because both involve learning; the correction is to check whether the text is about a job-related course or about academic study.
    • Choosing an option that mentions a popular ambition but is not supported by the Russian text; the correction is to find the exact phrase in the text that matches the option.
    • Missing a change of subject or tense, so the ambition is attributed to the wrong person or time; the correction is to track who is speaking and whether the plan is present or future.
