Tips and common mistakes
Common Exam Mistakes
Pitfalls to avoid in your exams
- •Treating the four skills as separate syllabuses with unrelated content. Correction: the questions are set in common contexts, so vocabulary and ideas learned for one skill transfer to the others.
- •Assuming the themes are only about everyday transactional situations. Correction: the contexts also address cultural themes, so prepare for cultural content as well as practical topics.
- •Revising from a flat topic list and ignoring the hierarchy. Correction: the content is organised into five themes, each broken down into topics and sub-topics, so learn the structure and work through it systematically.
- •Studying only the Russian-speaking context and treating the home country as irrelevant. Correction: all themes and topics must be studied in both contexts, so home-country material is required too.
- •Studying only the home country and assuming Russian-speaking contexts are background reading. Correction: the Russian-speaking context is a required part of every theme and topic.
- •Covering both contexts for a few favourite topics only. Correction: the requirement applies to all themes and topics, so audit your notes across the whole course.
- •Writing only in the present tense when the task asks about when you were younger; correction: use past-tense verb forms such as был or была to describe earlier life.
- •Listing qualities of a good friend without explaining them; correction: add a reason, for example saying why loyalty matters to you.

Expert advice for exam success
- •Make a one-page map of the five themes with their topics and sub-topics, and tick each off as you revise it.
- •For every sub-topic, practise all four skills in that same context rather than drilling one skill in isolation.
- •Collect contemporary and cultural examples as you meet them, and file each under the correct theme so your notes match the course structure.
- •For each sub-topic, write two short parallel paragraphs, one for your home country and one for a Russian-speaking country or community.
- •Keep a two-column vocabulary page per topic so you can talk about both contexts without switching to English.
- •When you review a topic, ask whether you could answer a question set in either context, and fill any gap you find.
- •Plan your response around each clause of the theme before writing, so no bullet is missed.
- •Build in a range of tenses and structures, including past, present and future where natural.
