Learn child development, early education practices, and safeguarding principles.
Childcare & Early Years qualifications prepare learners for essential roles in nurseries, primary schools, and family support services. The sector is regulated by Ofsted and requires practitioners to hold recognised qualifications.
Courses cover child development from birth to age 7, safeguarding, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, play-based learning, and inclusive practice. Learners gain mandatory placement hours in real childcare settings.
With the UK government expanding funded childcare provision, demand for qualified early years practitioners has never been higher — offering strong job security and clear progression routes.

To enrol on a Level 2 course, most providers will expect you to have GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and Maths, or a relevant Level 1 qualification. For Level 3 Early Years Educator courses, it is a mandatory requirement to hold GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above, and you must pass these before qualifying as an Early Years Educator, even if you are still working towards them. If you do not yet have these grades, some colleges offer them alongside your main course. Ultimately, good literacy and numeracy are essential for safe and effective practice with children.
Childcare & Early Years courses balance theory and practice. You will have written assignments, reports, and possibly exams, depending on the qualification. For example, the CACHE Level 3 Diploma involves assessment through written tasks, observations in placement, and a professional discussion. You will also create activity plans, reflect on your practice, and maintain a portfolio of evidence. While hands-on placement is key, the written work helps you understand the 'why' behind your actions and builds skills essential for further study or career progression.
Work placement is a core component of any recognised Childcare & Early Years course. At Level 2, you might be expected to complete around 250 hours over the year, while at Level 3 (for the Early Years Educator status), you will need a minimum of 350 hours across different age groups (0–2, 2–4, and 4–5). Your school or college will usually help you find a suitable nursery, preschool, or school setting, and you will be visited by an assessor who observes you in practice. You may be allowed to volunteer in your own time, but all placements must meet the required standards and be approved by your training provider.
Absolutely. Studying Childcare & Early Years is an excellent stepping stone to primary teaching. You will gain in-depth knowledge of the EYFS and child development, which is directly relevant to teaching reception and key stage 1. Many students go on to study for a degree in Primary Education or Early Childhood Studies, and having practical experience in early years settings makes your university application stand out. Some courses even allow you to gain credits towards a teaching degree. However, to become a qualified teacher you will ultimately need a degree and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which often requires GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science.
Both CACHE (now part of NCFE) and BTEC (Pearson) offer respected qualifications for early years professionals, but they differ slightly in assessment style and structure. CACHE qualifications, like the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce, are often assessed through a combination of written assignments, direct observation in the workplace, and a professional discussion, with a strong emphasis on competency-based evidence. BTECs, such as the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Children's Play, Learning and Development, often include more externally marked coursework and examined units. Both can lead to Early Years Educator status and are accepted by employers and universities, so your choice may depend on your preferred learning and assessment style, and what your local college offers.
