Develop skills to support learners with special educational needs and disabilities.
Learning Support qualifications prepare practitioners to work with learners who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). With over 1.5 million SEND pupils in England, qualified support workers are in critical demand.
Students learn about specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dyscalculia), autism spectrum conditions, sensory impairments, physical disabilities, and emotional/behavioural needs. Practical skills include creating individual learning plans and using assistive technology.
The 2014 SEND Code of Practice expanded local authority responsibilities, increasing demand for qualified SEND practitioners across mainstream schools, special schools, colleges, and community settings.

Learning Support as a standalone GCSE or A-level is not widely available, but you can study related subjects like Psychology, Sociology, or Health and Social Care. Vocational qualifications such as BTEC or CACHE certificates in Supporting Teaching and Learning are offered at many schools and colleges from Year 10 onwards, often alongside GCSEs or as post-16 options. These courses are equivalent to GCSEs or A-levels and are highly relevant.
Childcare focuses broadly on the care and development of children from birth to age five, covering play, health, and early education. Learning Support specifically addresses the needs of learners of all ages who face barriers due to SEND, emotional difficulties, or other challenges. While there is overlap, Learning Support emphasises intervention strategies, inclusion, and working within educational settings to enable access to the curriculum.
You will develop a mix of practical and interpersonal skills, including how to observe and assess individual needs, plan and deliver targeted support, and communicate effectively with learners, teachers, and families. You will also learn behaviour management, how to use assistive technology, and how to promote independence and self-esteem. These skills are highly transferable and valued across education, health, and social care settings.
While not always mandatory, work experience is highly recommended and sometimes required for vocational learning support qualifications. Placements in schools, special educational needs settings, or care environments allow you to apply theory to practice, build confidence, and evidence your skills for future employers. Many courses include a placement component, and volunteering can also strengthen your CV and university applications.
