Build essential literacy, numeracy, and personal development skills.
Foundations for Learning qualifications provide essential literacy, numeracy, and personal development skills for learners who need additional support before progressing to higher-level vocational or academic study.
Courses develop functional English and maths, ICT skills, personal organisation, teamwork, and independent learning. They are designed for learners at Entry Level to Level 1 who benefit from a supported, confidence-building approach.
These qualifications serve as vital stepping stones — enabling learners to progress into apprenticeships, vocational diplomas, or employment with the foundational skills that employers require.

Depending on your school or college, you can achieve qualifications such as a Level 2 Certificate in an Early Years Educator pathway, a T Level in Education and Early Years, or units within a BTEC in Children’s Play, Learning and Development. These qualifications are nationally recognised and count towards the ‘full and relevant’ status required to work in early years settings. Many universities also accept these qualifications for entry onto Early Childhood Studies or Primary Education degrees.
Yes, most courses incorporate a significant practical placement in a nursery, preschool, or reception class, typically one or two days per week during term time. This hands-on experience allows you to apply theory to practice, compile a portfolio of observations, and demonstrate your competencies against the EYFS standards. It is an essential component for gaining a licence to practice as an early years educator and is highly valued by employers and universities.
You don’t need any prior experience, but having a genuine interest in working with young children, patience, creativity, and strong communication skills will help you thrive. The subject requires you to be reflective and empathetic, able to understand children’s perspectives and adapt your approach to meet individual needs. Being organised is also important as you’ll balance coursework, observations, and placement responsibilities simultaneously.
