Assessment for AQA GCSE French is entirely exam-based, with no controlled assessment or coursework. Students sit four externally marked papers at either Foundation or Higher tier: Listening (25% of the total GCSE), Speaking (25%), Reading (25%) and Writing (25%). The Listening paper tests comprehension of spoken French through a range of short- and longer-response questions. Speaking assessments are conducted by the teacher and marked by AQA examiners; they include a role-play, a photo card discussion and a general conversation. The Reading paper focuses on understanding written texts and includes translation from French into English. The Writing paper requires students to produce extended written responses, including a translation from English into French. All papers are taken in the final year of the course, usually in the summer examination series.
